How do you compile/configure/install

I'm a little lost. Is there a way of finding out which driver is driving specific hardware? If so is it easy to reconfigure if it is not working as you'd like it? If there is a better driver for the job what is the process of switching them like? Do you have to uninstall the driver first and them in stall the new one? How do you install stuff, I keep coming across the word compiling and suddenly the air of ignorance breezes in. What I'm blindly been doing is going into different distros dvd folders and clicking on programs usually rpm files, sometimes they install, but if I try a different distros with deb files it doesn't work. What is going on?

Hi,
Deb files comes from debian and can't be used as rpm files, although the system is
fairly equivalent. There are programs which would transform rpm files into deb files
(alien is one of these programs).
If you want to compile from source, there is a sticky here in the tutorials section :

Hope it helps
