yeah - most likely it is Gaim itself as a firewall would prolly stop it immediatly rather than after ten seconds.
Another user got his Gaim to stop seg faulting by reinstalling - try a different package version or compile it from source - usually if one gives problems switching over to a different package will do the trick.
