Hi, I'm new to LinuxQuestions.org. This is my first post. I'm an old time UNIX Sysadmin, from the days before Y2K. In the old days, there was no GUI or a mouse. Everything was text based. About the only entertainment available was some text based games in the /usr/games directory. For example, if you typed 'fortune' it would run the Fortune Cookie program and display a clever saying.
A little known feature of the 'fortune' command is the 'fortune -o' option. This will display an offensive fortune. Some of these are pretty funny. Many of the offensive fortunes were written by UC Berkley college students in the early 70's. Most vendors discontinued the 'fortune -o' option so they wouldn't offend customers.
Well, now these offensive fortunes from the good ole days are back. In Ubuntu 8.04 you can install them with the Synaptic Package Manager and selecting the 'fortunes-off' package. Offensive fortunes are also available in Spanish with the 'fortunes-es-off' package and Italian with the 'fortunes-it-off' package. See the 'man fortune' help page for more info.
Other text based games are available with the 'bsdgames' package. There is a pretty good Backgammon game included. The keyboard strokes are kind of funky, but once you get used to them, it's a pretty easy to play. I have yet to find a good Linux graphical Backgammon game.
Yeah, forture is a great program, in slackware at least it's installed by default in most cases, kinda freaks out new users tho when it says something like 'panic cannot find /' or others You can search the forum there are posts where people are freaked out and don't know what to do about it, and we try to calm the down and tell them it's just a joke.
