How old is the "fortune" program?


Considering it occasionally feeds you back stabs at Gerald Ford and
references to the PDP-11 instruction set, it has to be getting on a bit.
Just curious to see if anybody knows fortune's history; I can't seem
to find any information.

if you had read the manual youd notice it has dates and many software version numbers listed, giving you an idea.

"Fortune" was originally from BSD Unix, written by Ken Arnold around 1977 or so:

Besides many notable contributions to computer science in general, he also wrote or co-wrote the BSD games Cribbage, Rogue and Hangman, among others.
