Question Festival

I downloaded this Text to Speech reader software recently. However, when I load the text to read, I don't hear the text. I have an old PC.

In xmms, when I listen to MP3 files etc., I can control the volume. But there is no volume control in Festival. I use a Knoppix HD install of Debian. Perhaps the solution is as simple as finding the general volume control for the system, but I can't seem to remember where it is for the moment in Linux.

Please Assist.

Thanks in advance.

Vijay

You can try the system sound with "alsamixer". Don't know if it'll help, could be you have to unmute a few extra channels or turn up the volume on one.

I tried to get Festival working a while back and i did succeed in getting it to work. However, i ran into the same problems as you by not starting the Festival Dameon first. After i started the dameon as root, it would work. (i'm sure you probably did that already but just thought i would mention it)

Have you taken a look at the documentation?

Festival Speech Synthesis System - Table of Contents
http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/manual/

festival man page
http://linuxcommand.org/man_pages/festival1.html

"Festival is very quiet. How do I make it louder?"

I just installed Festival. It works quite good. Synthesis not good but still very much better than nothing.
