Emacs Frustration

Currently I am using emacs as a programming IDE and I have been getting very frustrated. I have been trying to do a simple find and replace for all files in one directory. Specifically, I am trying to replace "\?" with "?". I have tried to do a etags *.* for a terminal prompt and then a M-x tags-search-replace RET \? RET ?, and I have not been having much luck. Is this overly complicated or is it just me?

I never had any problems with things like this with MS Visual Studio. Makes me wonder if it is worth using emacs as an editor.

I know that Emacs is the defacto-standard but I am finding simple tasks are overly complicated. Does anyone have any suggestions that will make it easier?
