CentOS 6.5 No Sound

This is my first post here.

I have installed CentOS to an old computer and turned it into a server. I have set up everything that I have needed so far on my own, although I have run into one roadblock.

I have the computer hooked up via VGA to my TV and I cannot get any sound (TV sound works perfectly). Any suggestions?

lspci -v | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

Hi,

Do you have pulseaudio installed? I remember on CentOS 6 I didn't have sound with GNOME2 w/o pulseaudio.

Thanks for the quick reply!

This is the output of "sudo yum install pulseaudio"

Package pulseaudio-0.9.21-21.el6.i686 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do

Any other ideas?

Well, at first, which environment do you use?
I have some experience in Gnome2 but have no idea how KDE works (:

Both environments have their own sound mixer frontends, so try to start it from the terminal. Or maybe try to start your media player (vlc, totem...) from the command-line as well.

Check which packages related to alsa and pulseaudio are installed.

I reckon the device is supported, so the problem is in the userland.

cheers

you are aware you installed a UNSUPPORTED operating system

CentOS 6.5 -- UNSUPPORTED
CentOS 6.6 -- UNSUPPORTED

the only supported in the older 6 series is 6.7

please UPGRADE ASAP!!!!!!!!
the 6.5 install dvd is missing almost TWO YEARS!!!! OF SECURITY UPDATES
this should output 6.7
Code:
su -
cat /etc/redhat-release
cent/rhel is using Pulse audio in series 6 and 7
normally alsa-mixer auto pluges into pulseaudio , but not always and there WAS a now fixed in 6.7 bug from 6.5 that sometimes alsa is set to MUTE at time of install

to check
Code:
alsamixer

You're trying to get sound through VGA or did I misread it?

At any rate, please give link to your ALSA info:
Code:
cd ~/
wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh

A VGA connector does not carry sound. How do you have the sound output from your motherboard or sound card hooked up?
