First CentOS is usually a server OS, so is having sound really required? Then, what kind of VM is it? VMware ESXi, VMWare WorkStation, VirtualBox, KVM, Xen, Virtual PC, HyperV? Without those details, it is close to impossible to help. Be sure you installed guess additions in your VM client of your VM software provide them.

unfortunately there are not many RHEL/CentOS operating system video tutorials

now some individual programs like "blender" have A LOT

but CentOS6 like RHEL6 is normally installed on a headless server
Cent dose add things for the desktop and for laptops

but multimedia is a VERY complex subject .Do to the DMCA and the USA and that cent is INSIDE the new " copyright/patent IRON CURTAIN " called The US of A .

you might want to start with the cent wiki
http://wiki.centos.org/

but with this on a VM
look into your VM install as being the problem

can you please define "headless server" does this just mean a server that sits in the corner of the room that you admin remotely?
i suppose sound is the least of my worries then...thanks for the input john
