Smile Centos 6.4 GUI interface will not install updates or process packages

Hi I recently changed/removed a user from my Linux machine and now the GUI software option will show that updates are available to be installed but when you click on the install button it just "runs" for a bit then go's back to the install update option without installing anything. If I use "yum" to run the process it works fine but the whole idea of using the GUI desktop was to be able to do these things without having to go to the Cli interface all the time. I am running centos 6.5 with the full Gnome desktop installed and am really loving it - just this stupid issue of getting the software update to work again and show the icon when software updates are available etc. As I am a real Linux newbie and am just learning this stuff any help or idea's in solving this problem would be appreciated.

the gui yumex has never worked well
and the gui app "apper" for updates is mostly busted / broken

use yum
Code:
su -
yum update
cent and REHL are basically server class OS's with a desktop gui added in

Also 6.4 is unsupported , there are NO updates

now depending on how you set it up 6.4 might have auto upgraded to CentOS 6.5
to check if it is 6.4 or 6.5 run ( in the terminal )
Code:
su -
cat /etc/redhat-release

I have checked the version and it is 6.5 which was working fine - updating etc. until I removed a user - now it will not update and I don't know how to fix it - get it working again.

did you remove the FIRST non root user ? ( uid 500 )

if you login AS root into gnome ( NOT recommended !!! )
you WILL have problems trying to use that update app , might not work

anyway the update app " apper " should pop up a pop-up asking for the root password

this program is notorious for NOT installing all of the updates

i disable it as one of the first things i do on a cent6 install

Much as I hate to disagree, I've got 6.5 at home and work, as desktops, therefore with GUI ... and the updater works just fine on both
