cdrecord works for root, but not non-priviledged user

Hello:

This is probably a redudnant post, I'm sure, but I can't find the answer to my question.

I can mount and use cdrecord from root but not from another user

This is from root:

[root@plutonium root]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.25
Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'
scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'TOSHIBA ' 'DVD-ROM SD-R1312' '1011' Removable CD-ROM
1,1,0 101) *
1,2,0 102) *
1,3,0 103) *
1,4,0 104) *
1,5,0 105) *
1,6,0 106) *
1,7,0 107) *
[root@plutonium root]#

This is from the user:

[mpdegroat@plutonium ~]$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: Permission denied. Cannot open '/dev/sg0'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
[mpdegroat@plutonium ~]$

Here's what my fstab looks like:[mpdegroat@plutonium ~]$ more /etc/fstab
/dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda1 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/hda5 /scratch ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb1 /scratch2 ext3 defaults 1 2
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
#####CHANGED 24 May 04######
#/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,users,exec,suid,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user,exec,suid,rw 0 0
oxygen:/home /home nfs defaults 0 0
oxygen:/var/spool/mail /var/spool/mail nfs defaults 0 0
oxygen:/scratch1 /scratch1 nfs defaults 0 0
mercury:/scratch /archive nfs defaults 0 0
[mpdegroat@plutonium ~]$

Any suggestions or help will GREATLY be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

It's normal, you've to be root to install/remove programs and change any configuration file outside your /home/user directory, among other things. You not really have logout and login again to be root. At the terminal, type "su". You will be prompted for the root password. Now you are root. When done, type exit to come back to non-root user .

Give the user an rw access to the /dev/sg0; either by adding the user to the same group as where the /dev/sg0 is, or Giving rw access to all the users for the device.
