for video as in a 3d video card or watching a video on a dvd ?
for movies http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS
install
yum install libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdplay libdvdnav lsdvd mplayerplug-in mplayer mplayer-gui \
compat-libstdc++-33 flash-plugin gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg libquicktime
mmm...not sure about the process here; why would I need a Title? I suppose I'll find out }:~
John VV, I was referring to dvd/movies...I got a lot further; got mplayer
installed!...a milestone in itself...I'm new to yum and determined to use
it...getting the repos configured to work was getting in the way...
anyway...i'm not out of the woods... I can actually run mplayer like this:
mplayer /media/X0419D/VIDEO_TS/*
with a dvd in the shute, and it 'sort of' works }:~ no audio of course,
that's another path...but this will pic up the files, 1 by 1 and play
the video...may be all i need to do is study mplayer config and that will
solve my existing problems...or
I'll try getting all the other stuff that you recommend in your post...
I'll do that first and see where it takes me
being very new to linux you might want to install and run Ubuntu .
everything for movies is installed by default .CentOS's target user is the office where watching movies is not a top priority.
you do know there is a GUI for mplayer so you do not need to run it from the terminal ?
the RPMForge install should have installed that . Look in
Applications / Sound and Video
also playing dvd movies is EXPERIMENTAL and only mostly works in mplayer.
for watching a dvd i would use VLC that is why i posted a link to it .
xine, vlc and ogle have better support for dvd (menus and things like that, to navigate it as normal). Some frontends for xine are kaffeine, gxine or xine-ui.
About sound, do you get some sound at all or are just dvd which fail?
Can you try to run "alsamixer" in a terminal emulator? If it runs ok, check that no channels (specially master and pcm) is muted, and that their volume is not zero. 'm' mutes and unmutes channels. The arrow keys can be used to navigate the controsl and raise/lower them.
