best way to install kernel from source???

Which is the best way to install kernel from source?
I want to download it here:
http://kernel.org/
But it is tar.bz2
How can I install it to my debian?
I know I have kernels in backports and repos, but I want to test and install it from source.
It is good idea to convert it to deb and install it with dpkg -i kernel.deb?
O maybe there are better way?

No you need to unpack the kernel to a directory and cd into that directory and run 'make menuconfig' or 'make help' for a list of make options.

You are going to need to read a howto or your kernel probably won't function properly.

The link I provided explains the steps. You need to configure the kernel before turning it into a .deb.

Yeah, but I thought you wanted a vanilla kernel to install? To do that you need to turn it into a configured .deb and then install with dpkg -i.

Vanilla means a kernel built directly from source downloaded from kernel.org. Most distributions apply some patches (modifications) and are therefore not "vanilla". Maybe chocolate chip? ;^)

kernel.org does *not* supply Debian packages, hence you can not install with dpkg -i.

If you want a very recent kernel, that you can build from source, and will work well with your system please follow the instructions in the link in post #2 by XavierP.

Cheers,

Evo2.
