how to install kernel-syms and kernel-source on fedora 6

I am trying to install driver software and in the readme, it says I need to have already installed the kernel-source, kernel-syms, and kernel-headers.

The only one I've been able to get is the kernel-headers. I've found info on kernel-source and have downloaded and built with "rpmbuild -bp --target=$(uname -m) /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.6.spec", which gives me files in directories, but if I do... rpm -q kernel-source ... I get package not found.

Also, I've been unable to find any information on how to get the kernel-syms package installed.

Any ideas on either issue?

Thanks,

Tony

i am gonna guess that under fedora what you really need is to install the kernel-devel and kernel-headers packages to enable you to build the drivers. AFAIK there is no such thing as a kernel-syms package under fedora, and the kernel-devel package should give you everything you need to build software against the current kernel.

btw, you do know that FC6 is no longer supported?

Thanks,

What am I doing wrong that the "rpm -q kernel-source" doesn't report it as installed?

Thanks,
Tony

Because you haven't installed "kernel-source" - in fact, there is no such thing as installing "kernel-source" under fedora. What you have done by running the command "rpmbuild -bp --target=$(uname -m) /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.6.spec" is to rebuild the kernel SRPM (source RPM) into a real RPM that contains the installable kernel. Even if you then installed that RPM that you built, it would NOT install the "kernel-source" that you desire, it would install the proper "kernel"!!

There is no way to install "kernel source" as such on new Fedora releases - the "kernel-source" packages have been replaced by "kernel-devel" and "kernel-headers". It is these packages that you require in order to build drivers against the current kernel.

ok, Thanks for the info. I did infact use the kernel-devel package in order to get the kernel-headers package installed. Problem is that the driver that I am eventually trying to install states that I need the these kernel-source, kernel-syms, kernel-headers packages installed for it's INSTALL to work (not working, getting the error that tells me to do the above). So, stuck in limbo. Not sure what to try next other than to install Suse 10.3 in order to match exactly their example. However, that just seems idiotic, not to mention it should work some way on my system.

Ugh...

What package/driver is it that you're trying to install? Isn't there a RPM available?
