10.1 install kernel and kernel-source different - build fails

Aloha,

I'm trying to build the NVidia drivers for my GeForce 6800. It fails to build and I believe it's a problem with the kernel-source. I'm currently running the stock kernel that came with 10.1 Official (2.6.8.1-12mdk; from uname -r), but when I did am RPM install of the kernel-source, I got 2.6.8.1-24mdk (which is sitting in /usr/src and I point the NVidia installer at this). I wouldn't think there was much of a difference, but apparently the NVidia drivers do.

Does anyone know how I can correct this? Either by getting the 2.6.8.1-12mdk kernel-source or another method? Thanks in advance,

Download the correct kernel source(kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk.i586.rpm) from here:

ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrak...86/media/main/

The kernel source you have installed is from a security update; the mdk updater won't install a new kernel automatically but it will install an incompatible kernel source. That's what happened - you have the old kernel with the newer mismatched kernel source.

Alternatively, you can install the updated kernel(kernel-2.6.8.1.24mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm) that matches your current kernel source here:

ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrak...tes/10.1/RPMS/

When installed a separate entry in lilo will be automatically made and you will have the option to boot your new kernel or the old one. Boot the new one and you should be able to install your nvidia driver but it will only work with the new kernel.

Awesome, thanks exactly the link I was looking for. Got the correct kernel-source and all is well. Thanks!
