aumix error

I use aumix to change the volume on my laptop, it was working fine a couple of days ago, but now when I try to use aumix to change the volume I get the following error:

[~]$ aumix
aumix:  error opening mixer: Success

I googled around and couldn't find anything that helps fix this problem.

try alsamixer instead of aumix

That doesn't really help..I'd rather use aumix because I can bind it in awesome: aumix -v 0 for mute aumix -v +1 for up 1, etc.

try using strace to see what it is doing.

This thread is old enough but I still had this problem. On fedora core14 the solution is to use amixer instead.
