try

apachectl start

or

/var/lib/apache/bin/apachectl start

if still nothing, try searching for file 'apachectl'.

If still doesnt work then try installing apache2, i found it easier to install , maybe you just did something wrong during the installation.
You coould also try building it from source.
Good luck!

well if you had to compile it, it probably wasn't a binary that you downloaded. did you get this "package" from apache.org? if so, my guess is that it's probably in /usr/local . anyway a quick:

locate httpd
or
locate apachectl

will tell you where it is.
