After installing Apache I get: "The page cannot be displayed"
After installing Apache I get: "The page cannot be displayed" I'm using Xubuntu and I believe I got all the packages right using Synaptic Package manager. I see the defaul apache folder but all I get is this:
Quote:
The page cannot be displayed

well that's clearly a Microsoft ISA server... you doing some form of reverse proxying or such? nothing to do with apache. have you tried just connecting to it locally on the machine itself??
I have another Linux machine in the network and everything works fine in that machine which is a LAMP server. The machine that is giving the error is the Xubuntu machine which is right next to me. We are running Apache on the LAMP machine with no problems and I never saw this message before. On the LAMP machine we installed MediaWiki and everybody inside the network is able to see the page. I'm able to ping the Xubuntu box as well, but not able the web pages in this machine.
well we can't troubleshoot somethign sitting behind a seperate server on a different network, there's so so many things in the chain there, including a lot of dubious M$ stuff... you need to go look at logs, remove the ISA server etc... tell us what does work and what doesn't work, and where from, not just that the final ultimate end goal doesn't work.
Thanks acid, but right now I'm not sure what kind of info. should I be looking for. What other info. should I give you? I'm sorry at this point I'm not sure what to do, everything I works fine on one machine and on the other it does not and they both have Apache, MySQL and PHP installed.
Thanks for your help I will see what else can I do...
well can you even get the web page from the server itself? can you get it from another server on the same network. is apache even running? can you prove it?
I cannot get the web page from the webserver itself, I'm typing the IP number and also trying "localhost". This is my /etc/hosts file(not sure it can help us):
apache is installed and its running!!
note use ps -ef to list your proccess or ps aux (widouth - )
run this command: (of course in your computer where you installed apache)
telnet 127.0.0.1 80
and write something end press enter
if you get something like that:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<html><head>
<title>501 Method Not Implemented</title>
</head><body>
<h1>Method Not Implemented</h1>
<p>get to /index.html not supported.<br />
</p>
</body></html>
try a /etc/init.d/apache start (or apache2 start, whichever ver you're using.)
If it doesn't start, check out the apache error logs.
Also, you can run netstat -tlnp to see what services are currently listening to which ports to find out if apache is acutally accepting connections.
And to check if apache is installed run dpkg -l |grep apache and that will tell you the package state.
Actually, rechecking you're process list, I can see that apache2 process are running. Run the netstat command to see what port they're listening too. Maybe they're only listening to ssl?
any iptables firewalls setup? might be an idea to flush everything to make sure there isn't.
I should know this, but right now I can't remember. I'm able to get the default Apache page by typing: http://127.0.0.1/apache2-default/ into the browser. Should I change anything in /etc/hosts?
xrgm@XubuntuLab:/etc$ telnet 127.0.0.1 80
