Removing User Name from Gnome

I am not allowed to have the name of the user displayed in Gnome during a locked screen.

It is RHEL 7.

How can I configure this setting in gdm to have the name not be displayed?

I think this is what you need: https://access.redhat.com/documentat...g-login-screen

Have you read your suggestion?

I had read that earlier but it does not address how to remove a user's name during locked screen. The cloest it does is say how to remove the list of users BEFORE logging in.

Anyone?

I did read my suggestion, that's whay I posted it. I did not pick up on your request until your second post because it didn't make any sense.

The only screen locker I know of that will not display user names is "slock". It does not display names or password box: you simply hit "enter" then type the password for the currently logged in user. No idea if it will work with Gnome or RHEL, you'll have to test.

Thanks. Unfortunately I do not have the option of using another desktop other than Gnome.

I found this link from the Red Hat knowledge base saying that Gnome..

Quote:
can be configured to hide the user list on login screen. But, there is no configuration settings that can be modify to hide username from GNOME lock screen.
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1749643

Has anyone confirmed this from another sources? Wondering if governmental STIGs have a solution?

Chris

Who says you "are not allowed to have the name of the user displayed in Gnome during a locked screen"?
If this is for a class, and you are required to use Gnome, and given that RHKB link, it looks like you might be SOL.

But it would be odd for them to give you a homework assignment with no solution. More information is needed

I think the that the thinking behind hiding the name of the user of a locked screen is to provide anonymity. Exposing who is logged in during a locked screen may allow a particular person to be a victim of too many failed attempts where the account becomes disabled.

The less information a potential hacker has about who is logged in, the better. Especially when they may have the ability to disable another's account with too many failed attempts by entering bogus passwords.

Weird that red hat would acknowledge that having a list of those who previously logged in as a security risk, thus a solution was provided, but having the name of the person currently logged in and who has possibly walked away from the locked screen as "not" a security risk?
