Removing Gnome

Hi there,

First of all I am a debian user.

I want to get rid of gnome and use fluxbox instead. I know the two can coexist, I just fancied freeing up some space on my hard drive. After googling about a bit I couldn't find anything suitable. All the 'aptitude purge gnome .....' commands just didn't work for some reason. Then I did the following:

Code:
# aptitude purge $(aptitude search gnome | grep A | awk {'$print 3'})
Basically, I got aptitude to search for all packages installed with 'gnome' in it, then proceeded to remove all of them. Was this the right thing to do? I'm not sure.

Once I did that, I logged out. I installed xdm prior to removing the gnome packages, so I thought when I logged out I would be greeted with the xdm screen but I wasn't. Any idea why? I had to log in from the terminal then issue 'startx'.

Another thing, I now have to issue 'dhclient' to connect to my network which is a pain.

I guess what I am asking is, what would be the proper way to remove gnome be? Any other answers to my other queries would be appreciated too. Thank you.

I think that in the past what I did was to purge one of the major library packages for gnome. That seemed to remove all packages that depended on it, including gnome.

As for fixing xdm, try dpkg-reconfigure xdm.

For the networking, make sure you have dhcp setup in /etc/network/interfaces.

Thanks for the reply pljvaldez.

The networking issue and xdm seemed to have resolved themselves after a reboot somehow.

It's hard to tell if my method worked. I just did a "aptitude search '~i' | grep gnome" and only 2 insignificant packages showed up, so I *think* it is removed, but I can't be sure.

One more thing, if anyone knows how to change the resolution effectively in fluxbox then please let me know. I have crap eyesight so I need things to be 1024x768 preferably, or 800x600. I tried 'xrandr' as described in the fluxbox wiki, but the windows become huge and span out way past the edge of my screen.
