Weird boot issue... (BIOS?)

I am having an interesting problem. My secondary machine, (Win2K Pro at the moment) which, overy other boot, gives an "operating system not found" error. It is exactly every other boot that it does this, like clockwork. I am led to believe something hardware is causing this as it has occurred with multiple OS's... Anybody else experience and solve an issue like this?

don't know if it's related...

with Lilo on MBR and Mandrake and XP i found that if i told XP to reboot the pc expecting to go back to Lilo i found that the pc hung on reboot with message about XP being wrecked,
whereas if i tell XP to switch off the problem goes away

and having removed all windows from my pc (yeeha) no problems at all

may not be related
but
windows products hate linux products
linux products are cool with windows

go figure
