Troubleshooting NTP issues, what does echo $? mean?

Doing some straight forward troubleshooting of NTP.

Once of the commands that I see to troubleshoot NTP is

# echo $?
# 0

I know this is some sort of Shell Command, however I don't understand what the command does and why it returns a value of 0 for our servers that are setup correctly for NTP.

The ones that aren't setup correctly for NTP is either returns a 1 or 0.

thanks

Here you are, please read this:

And this:

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/exit-status.html

To understand 'echo $?' and exit status codes.
