total crashes of system

hi guys,

i work in dell inspiron15 with pre-installed ubuntu 12.04 lts 64bit

the dell's support helped me to test the system for any hardware issues but nothing was found.
i've been having this bug that troubling me for a long time.
since the system crashes completely i couldn't understand what to look at exactly but today i found out how to reproduce it...

i open "gimp" and try to "save as" a pic.
then i try to change(scroll) the picture quality bar with the "preview" on and that's how everything crashes and i have to hardboot!

this is just a procedure that i found which causing my system to crash. i don't have to do exactly that for my system to crash...
i've got crashes when i use ftp program to upload files, when i "import" a pic to a program(ex: opencart) having the file manager opened or even when i just surfing the internet(happened yesterday) and the file manager is open.

i've downloaded also "pcmanfm" but still the same issues.

i've opened a bug in lunchpad also but still no answer.

any help please?

i try to upgrade to 12.10 (as it suggests) but i cannot.
it gives me an error message like "network issue" but i am normally online..
should i do it from the terminal?

by the way.. shouldn't i be able to upgrade directly to 14.04 Lts?
