Thinkpad cpu kernal error when trying to install ubuntu. and lockup mint

Hello,

I have aquired (4) IBM THINK PAD T42's which have Fedora Core.I do not have the passwords. I want to install a different flavor of Linux on the machine. Tried UBUNTU, MINT, and was olny able to install an old copy of
LINSPIRE 5.0. I can not connect to th internet because the home page can not find Linspire.com. I am stuck with out an operating system that is usable. I am running ubuntu on my Dell INSPIRON 6000 with out a problem.
The THINK PAD's are like new.

Thank you,

Welcome!

Have you tried Lubuntu? Ubuntu is a little heavy for T42. You can reset the passwords for Fedora Core if you want to, but it is better to have a modern distro.

ThinkPad T42 doesnt have support for PAE so if you want to install a distro make sure you download the non PAE version.

A good distribution for you laptop would be Bodhi Linux which offers a 32 bit Non PAE version
Here is the link http://www.bodhilinux.com/downloads_desktop.php

I dont know if Lubuntu offers a non PAE option.

Another OSs I had good succes installing was Arch Linux, SlackWare Linux, and FreeBSD 10.0
Those are good but kind of crazy installing them, but they do work on your Thinkpad
