The 'Lost+Found' folder on usb HD

Hello,

I was wondering wether the 'Lost+Found' folder in the root directory of my usb harddrive is absolutely necessary?

It's actually the file system journal on Ext3/4 file systems. Without it, you would be stuck with something similar to Ext2 with no journal.

The lost+found directory is where corrupted files are placed after an fsck on an extN file system. AFAIR it has nothing to do with the journal.
