You can try it but if everything ran OK for 3 years, that ram is probably compatible. I'd give it a shot; some of your added ram may have gone bad over time. I assume that when you speak of "sleep mode" you're talking about suspending to ram. The issues you are describing appear to arise in connection with suspending to ram which again, points to a ram problem.

I would try what you suggest. The worst that can happen is what is happening now.
