Your right. Sorry. Yes, I tried for weeks setting up Slackware, later trying Debian and finally CentOS, only to find I burned the CDs to fast. I think you can verify the integrity of the disk(s) by doing a sumcheck.

Also cdburnerxp works well if during install you make it default iso burner.

No problem. I'll give it a shot, though all the burner software on my laptop only gives me the option to go down to 10x. To answer the original question, 24x was the default speed and what I've used for everything up to this point.

Are you sure? I installed Slackware and ran it numerous times, even running appliations, but it kept crashing. An experienced Linux user asked me about my burn speed, knowing my system was up. With CentOS, I installed the OS, and got as far as setting up the root password, which is where it froze. At that point I decided to burn at a slower speed which worked without glitch.

I used 24x at first. I reduced it gradually to 4x which finally worked.

So on this rare occasion, I was able to get Ubuntu to actually boot off the cd and come up. Obviously, since I'm posting this off the system I'm trying to get to work, I don't have the NIC disabled at the moment. I've attached the syslog. The output of dmesg is attached as well.

Okay, either you've got a scratch/fingerprint on your disk, or your CD-ROM/DVD ROM is having issues.
Easiest way to tell is to run these two commands;
tail -f /var/adm/messages &
time dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/null

If you start seeing errors on your screen, it's either a bad ROM drive, a bad CD/DVD-R disc, or a bad burn. To be sure, throw another burn in there and re-run the test.

@bluegospel
Or what? (Did I half-type a post and hit "submit" again? I hate it when I do that...)

Burn speed, I mentioned it thrice, well, now four times. The Oate promised to check it.

I'm in the process, have it trying to load up the one I burned at 10x. As far as the cds go, they all look perfect in terms of finger prints so I don't think the cds are the issue, at least not for being dirty. I suppose the discs could just be bad in general. I've had them a long time, though never had any issues with them before. The drive itself is always possible too.

Maybe the optical lense is dirty.

No /var/adm directory. I ran time dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/null for a couple minutes. Here's the output:

406609+0 records in
406608+0 records out

real 1m22.019s
user 0m0.316s
sys 0m1.548s

Also, looked at the syslog and still seem the same sort of errors as xeleema noted before.

Like I said, 4x was the only speed that worked for me.

I get the buffer errors when using live-cd's especially if it's supposed to be removed from drive.
