Cool ubuntu freezes at login

Hi i'm using ubuntu 9.1 on my laptop(hp pavilion dv4: AMD turion(tm) X2 Dual-core mobile RM-72, 4G of RAM, ATI Rodeon HD 3200 Graphics) and im dual booting with win7. I have used ubuntu for a while but the other day i tried to log in and when i tried it just froze. I'm able to enter my password but once it starts loading up it just freezes. I'm able to use my mouse but there is nothing i can do anyway. The last thing i remember doing was moving the taskbar around but i dont think that caused th problem. Someone help.
thanks!

When the login screen comes up, hit ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to a terminal.
Do the following:
Login as the normal user, and sudo to root.
Type and follow the following commands. Don't type anything between the pound signs.

Code:
ps aux| grep bin | grep dm
## The number here is the display manager##
kill <display process number>
apt-get <or the similar command> -y install chkrootkit
##Let it install##
chkrootkit -<options>
##Let it run##
apt-get update <display manager> <Xorg>
##Let it run##
apt-get upgrade
##Let it run##
exit
Reboot.

This may help a little.
