startx will not start xwindows... "XIO: fatal IO error 104"


Im trying to get xwindows to start, but i get an error message. I just installed the latest nvidia drivers for my geforce 3 after a fresh install of Red Hat 7.2 enigma.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (COnnection reset by peer) on xserver ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

If anyone knows how to fix this and get xwindows to work please let me know. Email khermans@amalasoft.com

Ok Kris, now I need to see the Monitor, Graphics device and Screen sections of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or /etc/X11/XF86Config if there is no -4 version.

Hey Aussie, mind trouble shooting the same problem on two machines??? After switching video drivers I got the same fatal server error khermans has. Apparently, the Radeon 7500 is not supported just yet in XFree86 4.1.0 and when I chose the Radeon driver through the settings tool in Mandrake (can't remember the name of it...somethingDrake) I lost X Windows after rebooting. As I remember, that's how it went down. Anyway, if you want my XF86Config file also I'll post it. By the way, why is there a -4 version of that file? There were 4 or 5 different versions of the config file there. Anyway, thanks for any help. If you don't want to trouble shoot two systems that's cool. I ought to be able to figure it out by following what you do with khermans.

XFree86 3.x.x series has a different config file syntax to XFree86 4.x.x, you get a copy of XF86Config for 3.x.x and XF86Config-4 for 4.x.x in distro's that include both versions like mandrake and redhat, that way there is always a correct config file for whatever version you install. In slack 8 or a LFS install where you only have one version of X the file name is not as inportant as having the correct syntax.
And post your configs x^n, and I'll have a look at them.

I had the same prob with RH7.2 and NVDriver, I tried the rpm and it didnt work, then i tried compile from source but it didnt work. Then I forced the RPM version of nvidia kernel driver to install by ingnoring errors and dependances and it worked. I installed driver rpm from within x using gnomerpm. Havnt had any probs yet. RTCW runs faster and smoother then it does on win98.

What distro/kernel do you have kehrmans?
and what version of X? (you can check with "XFree86 -version").

Here's my XF86Config-4 file. Before posting this I went in and edited a copy of this hoping to get into X with a generic driver. In the Graphics Driver section I commented out all of the Radeon stuff and in the Screen section I changed the Device to point to the Generic VGA Identifier. Well I got into KDE, but I couldn't see a dang thing. The only way I knew I got in was because I heard the welcome chime. My monitor started acting like it was about to sleep and then some message about frequencies came up. Oh well. At least I'm learning a lot more. And besides, browsing the web in text only style is kinda cool, in that sick and twisted way.

Ok, with that version of X we only need to worry about /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and only the monitor, graphics device and screens sections.
