XIO: fatal IO error 04 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"

hey everyone,

i have an old compaq armada 7800 (6266 series) laptop laying around at my house that i havnt used in a year becausei dont trust runing windows 98 on my network.

i do not have a cd rom drive for it, and i cant get into the bois (because the compaq armadas dont use flash but rather a partion a with the config on it which was distoryed before i got the laptop.) to see i i could boot from a USB key.

anyways because i dont have a cd-rom drive and this isnt the most beefy system (400mhz P II with 128 mbs SD Ram and 4mbs or on video memory) i decied to install ZipSlack.

I was able to install ZipSlack with out any problems as well as download and install all the packages needed for X, but now i am getting this error when i type startx

(EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.X.Org
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

XIO: fatal IO error 04 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (o known processed) with 0 events remaining.

i have tryed using xorgconfig and editing xorg.conf but have had no luck. any help or ideas would be great appreciated!

Did you try to set the video driver to 'vesa' in xorg.conf ?
Which video card ? /sbin/lspci | grep -i vga

Good, there is a X driver for your card

Try 's3virge_drv' as video driver

I'm assuming you're having the same or similar problem. Typically running 'xorgsetup' fixes these kind of things. If it does not, I believe you have an Intel i810 series card (I would much prefer to see the entire output of '/sbin/lspci' because what you posted doesn't explicitly say which card you really have, just the controller, but the controller is Intel, so the card is 99.9 % likely to be Intel also, and 90% probably an i810 or something that will work with this driver), anyway, check the guide here:

I'm having the same issue. I am also having quite a hard time getting this fixed, haha... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fedora Release 7 (moonshine)
Kernel 2.6.22.5-76.fc7 on an x686

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (known processed) with 0 events remaining.

$/sbin/lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV6 [Vanta/Vanta LT] (rev 15)

***************************

I had just used "Fedora_frog" To update the Nvidia Drivers. This problem began after the install following a reboot.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brandon
