I am running Mandrake 8.1 on this machine and I have it plugged into a Linksys router.
My problem stems from this. When I started to set my mail up I chose Kmail. I was able to set it up so that I was able to receive mail perfecly. However I cannot send mail through SMTP. I even went as far as to forward the ports even though that is not necessary.
The error message i get using Kmail to send mail is:
"Sendmail failed. A SMTP error occured. Command: Mail. "
I eventually grew tired of this and tried Netscape and it worked the first time. I didn't have to configure the ports in it.
So my question is: Why did Netscape work. Second, what SMTP port is it using and how would i find this out as it is not listed in Edit - Preferences etc. Third is Kmail worth setting up or is there something much better?

Hello, Try this:
Open K mail:
Go to Settings .... Configure Kmail
Look at this screen carefully and make sure the bubble beside SMTP is selected, and that your smtp information is entered correctly in the server line. Mine uses port 25. Sounds like you might have "sendmail" selected here instead of SMTP. Hope this helps.
I am sure that I have the SMTP radio button turned on and not the sendmail one. That is what I find so wierd that it works for one email client and not another.
I think a lot of this has to do with my router but I have checked the option and even tried forwarding the ports but it doesn't seem to work.
Is there anything else I can try to that may be effecting the kmail configuration?
Does anyone have an explanation why Sendmail in Evolution works and in KMail it doesn't?
I run slocate to figure out where is my sendmail. There are lots of sendmails! But the one pre-configured in KMAil, namely: usr/sbin/sendmail is absent.
I tried to give a path to one of the sendmails which Evolution probably uses, but it did not work. Error message told:
I have problem sending with Kmail 1.5 . I already set all configuration in smtp. But still can't send. For info my sending transport need " Server requires authentication "... I already all my account plus password, but it will reject and said an error
The server did not accept the sender address
The server responded: "malformed input"
The following transport protocol was used:
