Setting display resolution

I am a little past newbie stage, but I always worry about posting my question in the wrong place. Given the amazing variety of distros, packages, and hardware, it seems you have to ask excruciatingly specific questions to get a useful answer.

Moderator: if this is misposted, please let me know..or simply put it in the right forum. Thanks.

I have a dual boot XP/Xubuntu HP laptop (zd8055us). I have Xubuntu 9.10, updated to kernel 2.6.31.16

My current problem is this:
I logged in as I normally do, to a non-root session, and changed my screen resolution to one that
APPARENTLY can't be supported--my screen went blank. I had to reboot.

I discovered that I simply cannot successfully log in to that account now.
My question is this:
Is there a way to change the screen resolution for that account from the root login?
Hope someone can point the way for me. Thanks!

Moved to a new thread.

I can understand the concern about where to post, but---regardless---always start a new thread unless your question is directly relevant to an existing thread.
