Sendmail and /var/mail

I'm using "SENDMAIL" command in perl to send email.
If I send email /var/mail size is getting increased , Is there any way so that I can prevent /var/mail getting increased
Please explain relation b/w var/mail and sendmail command

If you send mail, this mail needs to be stored somewhere.

If you don`t want mail to be stored simply don`t send any mail!

I think u have not understood my point
I have to send email and the same time I have to clear /var/mail
directory . My simple question is how to do that?

maybe you can use "rm -r" ?
