Unhappy RedHat 9 wont startup

I am running a dual boot system with windows xp professional and Redhat 9. XP boots fine but when i try to start linux it dosent work.
My mobo is a Abit VT7 with 512 ram. One thing that puzzles me though i have a crappy server with onboard everything and it runs linux fine !?!

The boot menu has 2.4.20-8smp and 2.4.20-8 and Windows XP
When i start the 2.4.20-8smp one, it starts to load then stops at "VP_IDE Unknown VIA SouthBridge disabling DMA" and it freezes there.

I went to edit the kernel line in the 2.4.20-8smp and it is "grub edit> kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8smp ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi"

the 2.4.20-8 has a different problem- it starts to load then stops at "Code: ff 50 10 eb d0 eb 0d 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90"
<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Pleez help me fix this!!!

Use this as grub reference, modify as needed: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...part=1&chap=10

And you have scsi hardware to specify that your drive is SCSI?

Also instead of root=LABEL=/ use : root = /dev/hd[your root partition]

Btw, the fact that it runs is not that fascinating, more fascinating is the fact that i successfully run linux on a P1/200 with 48 MB ram on all-built-in SiS Motherboard.... But then i'm just bragging, aren't i?...

I have exactly tha same problem

I have exactly the same problem.

I've tried editing Grub to tell the computer where to boot from, but still haven't had any success.

At first I thought the problem was related with my VIA VT8237 Southbridge but apparently others with the same southbridge have install red hat 9

Did you sort your problem out??

If anyone know how to solve this I would appreciate any hep very very very much.
