redhat 9 install fails on /dev package

i installed rh9 succesfully and sound was working with my AC97 codec (via onboard) soundcard, but then red hat network updated some packages and broke the sound support.

since i hadn't done anything with it, i thought i would just re-install and not do the update this time, but now the install fails. i have tried a graphic and text based install, and it always fails when it goes to install the rpm package about /dev directory...

any idea whats making it fail?
