I recently installed redhat 9 (2.4.20.6) onto my computer. The nforce 2 motherboard has a built in geforce 4, ethernet card, and soundcard. My display works fine (thank god) but I'm unable to hear any sound, and I've tried using the soundcard detection app to no avail. Also, when I boot up I get a message saying my ethernet device (nvnet) can't be activated because it isn't present. I've installed the latest drivers from nvidia.com and still haven't had any luck. Does anyone know how I can get sound and ethernet working?
I'm having the same problem. But I may be a bit ahead of you. This is my 4th install of Redhat and last time I managed to get the soundcard detected (just not sure how!) I have just finished the install and am slowly working through my setup from lots of noted I made previously, and posting answers to problems as I fix them.
It was really odd. I have no sound for weeks, then, one day, I booted up and was presented with a sound setup screen. I had made a few wierd changes to my system though and it's just a case of working through and finding out which one made the difference...
As soon as I sus the sound card I'll let you know. (I've never managed to get the network card up though)
I had the same problem with mandrake 9.0 and nforse 2 chipset, no onboard video, no onboard lan... I got sound work's with nvidia mandrake 9.0 rpm driver, but it cause problems installing the onboard lan (which I dont' have)... Now i have the same problem with mandrake 9.2... I can't get sound work... My suggestion is to try alsa 0.9.6 (nforce sound is realtek ac97, alc 650), i hope someone resolve that problem, so we can get out sound from that thing...
It worked for me..... now, one thing to be careful of.... make sure you remove any previously attempted installs of the driver
"rpm -e NVIDIA_nforce-####" (### is whatever version you loaded)
The tutorial worked great for me, however, i am still having a problem with my computer "stuttering" when accessing the Internet. I think the network driver is hogging all the CPU cycles. I'll update you when i figure out the fix.
davehudsn, this is a great tutorial for the LAN. This does nothing for Realtek alc650 sound. I have seen 75 posts on this problem in this forum. Everyone sends us to the NVIDIA site. This does not fix sound. buboleck and lovelyguinness, I tried the alsa project for the realtek driver, but the instructions are horrible. Try alsamodules in synaptic or http://www.alsa-project.org/ and maybe between you and this forum we can get it figured out. It's funny at one point I had no LAN connection, I went through the tutorial as listed by davehudsn. After trying many things to get sound working I did a fresh reinsytall and now am unable to get LAN working as I did before. Getting to the point where I beleive if you look up buggy in the dictionary you will find Linux Redhat !
