Ha ha! I disabled my intel 810 onboard sound years ago, it was a real PITA to set up.

My suggestion ? get a copy of the latest Ubuntu (it's better and _CONSIDERABLY NEWER_ than deadrat 9) and boot that. It will run "live" initially i.e. from the CD/DVD drive without putting anything on your hard drive - it's hardware detection is also superior to the redhat 9 - and see what you get.

If you get some sound then I'd install it. Nuts to deadrat - in anycase, the redhat 9 was the last of a "both" version from them - after that, they forked it so distros actually called "redhat" are now enterprise products, the community supported version is known as "fedora" (and yes thats exactly what the "hat" is, but coloured red) the latest, know by it's "core" version, is fedora Core then it's either version 5 or 6 I can't say for certain, I've never liked or used their stuff.

regards

John

p.s. Oh and yes, the bit you posted refers to a 2.4.20 kernel, which I believe is now considered unsafe/insecure i.e. anything before 2.4.22 - even though now, AFAIK the majority of distros are using the 2.6 series kernels.
