password recovery


i have forget the root password of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Please tell me how to recover it from the other linux account of the same version.

i also want to know that after setting the new password did i have to repair the grub or grub will be as usual...

You can reset the root password by rebooting into run level 1


1. Restart your server.
2. When the GRUB prompt appears press 'e' on the selected Red Hat installation.
3. Select the linux image you would like to boot and type 'e' (don't select initrd image)
4. Type rhgb quuite 1

It will boot your server in single user mode with root prompt.

You can reset password here using passwd command.
