OpenGL and X server

I am trying to install ny nvidia graphics card. To do this apparently I need to turn off my X server and kill any OpenGL applications. I have an idea what x is but dont know how to turn it off and I havnt a clue what OpenGL applications are or how to stop them. Can anybody help?
