OK... So I am running fine with the 2.4.22 kernel and the fglrx drivers from ATI for my Radeon 9500. The problem is that I want to add a Sata drive... No problem right? 'cuse Sata is supported in 2.6.1 and it doesn't say (EXPERIMENTAL)
I browse over to the Slackware forum and find a compiling guide and follow it to the letter. (I add support for my Radeon card before compiling)
So I restart and come back to Lilo. I have my "Linux" and "slack.old" so I select "Linux". Before I see a single line, the screen goes black. My monitor says nothing. (If there is no signal or the signal is out of the frequency range, it tells me.)
I waited a good long time to see if I would get anywhere. Nothing still. So to restart the computer I type "root" (enter) ~root password and hit enter again... wait a second... Then I type "shutdown -r now" and I wait a little while and sure enough it worked.
So this is telling me that the new kernel is running fine, except I have nothing for my display.
