new video card, switch resolution rh9

rh9 latest kernel.

aight, so i had a gf4 mx in there, but it burned. put my friends radeon 9000 in. my mx was set at 1280x1024, and the highest the radeon will "go" is 800x600 according to the xconfig file. so i went in there and added "1280x1024" and "1024x768". saved. restart x, didn't switch to 1280. went into display properties and it has 1280 highlighted, but in the pix it shows its not in it and 1280 is bigger. i didn't hit anything, just ok and it said it was saving the config. well saving, aka overwriting my additional resolutions and it put it back to 800x600. now my ? is how can i switch to 1280 or 1024??? cuz this whole not being able to see everything sux! help!
