netconfig question, what the heck should I do.

I need a way to test and make sure my ethernet card is working properly, and I also need to know how to configure it useing netconfig. I know what the static ip is for the ethernet port im using, but I don't know the gateway domain, or any of that stuff. If you guys could tell me how to find it so I can get my card working that would be great. Also the card diagnostic to make sure its in there right.

Thanks a ton

PS I have my laptop connected to the ethernet port right now so I can get the info from here if need be thanks.

ok I found the subnet mask, I found the gateway, I have my own ip, but what I don't understand, is what it wants when it asks for hostname and for the domain name. also do I need to restart my computer everytime I use netconfig so that the settings change?

thanks

hostname is just the name you want to give to your computer
you can leave domain name blank.
It is only necessary when you are on a domain.

I think so. Just type "ifconfig" to see your settings.
