Miseries at install from HDD&floppies, with vector ISO& how to boot with vector linux

Hi!

I' m trying to revive the antiquated PC hardware,
Here's my PC hardware composition as following:
==========================
inter pentium 166 CPU,
64 M RAM,
inter 430 TX mother-board,
quantum 4.3G hard disk(bigfoot)5200 n,
Creative graphic blaster exxtreme PCI graphic card(Permedia 2 Rev1 chipd),
1.44"diskette drive,
Yamaha (XG)724 F-V chipset based PCI sound card ,
Lite-on 52X speed CD-rom,
WS5628-B PCI modem( Ambient MD5628D-L-C Chips)/( another name:intel536ep),
=========================
someone suggested me to install vector 4.0, then I'd give vector linux 4.0 a try, just downloaded vector linux 4.0 latest ISO. image to fat partition and extracted it to as ...c:/veclinux,
later with rawwriteWin I made boot&root diskes from
"bootide.img&root.img", once reboot, it went smoothly,installation went on, but extremly slow,"Bzip2 veclinux" took about 10mins,"Bzip2 xfree43" took 15 mins,.... once finished "bzip2 xfree43" it suddenly stalled at
" Chicken!!!" ....."typing passwd to fix" "other console messages" before going to hardwares 'setup&config.

What special command should I apply to go with installation from HDD succefully for vector4.0 with boot&root floppy disces?

Later ON I PLUGOFF QUUNTUM HDD AND PLUG IT INTO ANOTHER NFORCE2 MB(EPOX-8RDA3G), INSTALLATION WENT SMOOTHLY,...I put it back to that antiquated PC, let sys. to detect hardwares antomaticly,it's ok , but can only enter Vector linux by
booting from bootdisk ( typing : linux root=/dev/hda1 ro)..No lilo .while lilo can't be installed either to superblock or floppy disk, ONLY ERRO MESSAGE, I tried editing /etc/lilo.conf then /sbin/lilo, it prompted " partition entry not found", in fact partition 're just there by typing "fdisk -l",/HDA1,/HDA5,/HDA7,ETC
OF COURSE I SET BIOS 'S VIRUS WARNING TO "DISABLE" ALL THE TIME
.......HOW SHOULD I FIX THE LILO ISSUE?

Yet I still haven't figure out how to boot with vector linux 4.0 live cd's ISO image (on Fat partition of windows) for having a try Vectorlinux 4.0 live CD?anyone did run it from HDD successfully?

there's no Cd-writer around me at all. only HDD install with floppy & iso image suit me .

you see from main doc .of vector &website '
, I found no clue of solutions at all.

Hope you could help me through your real experiences with vector 4.0& live.

Write me back then.

( typing : linux root=/dev/hda1 ro)
That's one issue : the "ro"-part at the end of that line means you mount the system as "read-only" , so you can't make any changes.
Try mounting it without that option(or with the option "rw") , edit your /etc/lilo.conf and then run "/sbin/lilo".
If it works ; WRITE LILO TO THE MBR.(MasterBootRecord)
If it doesn't : try to post the relevant outputs from "dmesg" here.(cat dmesg) Also : check the outputs from the various log-files(in /var/log/messages) ; there might be some enlightening lines in them as well.

Hi!Megamieuwsel,

Thanks your helpful reply!
I'm trying your method now,but
HOW to post the relevant outputs from "dmesg" to here,you see now the networking of Vector 4.0 not working yet, any special commands could let me export the output of dmesg to a floppy or USB flashdisk?
I mounted it without "ro" , edited /etc/lilo.conf and then run "/sbin/lilo".it prompted:" partition entry not found"
, in fact partition 're just there by typing "fdisk -l",/HDA1,/HDA5,/HDA7,ETC
later I tried mounted with the option "rw", problem remains.........

Then I tried VASM---LILO---simple------mbr, erros remains, it promped:
==================================

Sorry , but the attempt to install LILO has returned an error, so LILO has not been correctly installed, You'll have to use a bootdisk to start your machine instead,It should still be possible to get LILO working by editing the /etc/lilo.conf and reinstalling LILO manually. See the lILO main page and Documentation in /usr/doc/lilo for more help

Ok , so "simple" didn't pan out.
Let's try "expert" this time.
vasm => Lilo => Expert =>Begin => read carefully and fill in all the relevant info accurately.(typos are lethal in Linux....)
Then(Still in Vasm's expert-Lilo-menu) go to "Linux" and add your Linux-entry there plus the name it should display during boot.
Then hit "Install".

I think a lot of people , new to a distro , tend to shy away from stuff branded "expert" or "advanced". No need for that in VL ; all the info , you need to do it right is presented where you need it.(In Vasm , at least....)

Now , about how to get those outputs on a floppy:

If you can run X , you're in luck: this will be very easy.
In your preferred DE you open an xterm-window (aterm works as well) and type "dmesg".
Open an editor (NEdit hides behind the "XWordpad"-icon IIRC...).
Highlight(select) the output , you just got in the console and paste it into the textfield of the editor.(Middle-click)

Now : insert a floppy in your drive and mount it.( mount /mnt/floppy )
Save your textfile as /mnt/floppy/dmesg.txt.

There's your dmesg-output , neatly on a floppy.

The log-files can be opened directly in a text-editor and saved in just the same way.

If X isn't working (yet....) , I'm a bit at a loss for how to do that dmesg-thingy(try copying between terminals , maybe? never tried it...)
But the log-files should be no problem. (nano is a handy console text-editor.)

Btw.- If this doesn't work , I'll have to acknowledge my defeat and send you to the "higher court" on this matter :http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/
Being the board-admin there (I'm SuSE-Refugee) doesn't mean , I'm an expert on Linux......

LILO"S IN FUNCTION

HI!Megamieuwsel,

Thanks a lot!

Tried "expert" option to install LILO following your advices, IT WORKED! through functional LILO now, booting to sys gets faster, kernel 2.4.22 get loaded, 8139d pci network card& Yamaha 724 pci sound card get into fully functional.

The whole system seems to be ok now, while browsers' plugins haven't downloaded yet, no tools to play Vedio,VCD, MPEG,real format ,yet......

Do I need to make any online updates and get security patches?which commands should do the work?
would "urpmi" work?

many thanks again!

Bon weekend!

Both ACPI and APM appear to be enabled. Turn one of them off : they're interferring with eachother.

And:
Code:
hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
 hda: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
Don't worry about that one : Happens with my Bigfoot (3.2 Gig , used for back-up purposes) as well.
Looks like a typical(but as far as I can see : harmless) Bigfoot-issue to me.

In regards to your question about the need for updating kernel and/or security-patches :
Updating the Kernel may break the system somewhere as the later kernels dropped support for some older hardware and you may end up working for hours , if not days to get it right again. If it's not broken : Don't fix it.
