Network: Able to connect to encrypted, but unable to connect to open.

Hi!

When I first installed my OS, Elive17, I had no problems connecting to my wireless connection at home. I scanned for networks, found our home network, typed in the key, and bingo! It still works. However, I can't connect to a open network at university. It's not encrypted, so I should be able to connect. What should I do?

I assume you mean connect to a wireless access point at the university. Do you know whether anyone is allowed to log in? Sometimes "open" APs are not open at all (some of them refuse connection to anyone not on a privileged MAC list).

Also signal strength is an issue. In noisy environments, even though it seems as though there is adequate signal strength, the AP can't detect your signal. Then there is the issue of DHCP -- in most cases, your system needs to negotiate using DHCP. Make sure this is set up.

One solution to the signal strength issue is to find the AP and sit next to it with a laptop, see if that helps.

Finally, if none of this works, post again and provide some details. You haven't said much about your system or wireless adaptor.
