First question is:
I cant stream MP3 files from my friends XP machine.
from what i have found i need to mount it, ir use samba? i tried both and failed.
can anyone tell me how to do this?
second question:
i set up this linux box on my computer...with the intentions of putting the HD in another computer. is this possible without having too many, errors/ptoblems at all?

It depends on how much customization you've done to your OS. If everything is pretty much default and you're going to stick the hard drive in the new machine as the same device then everything should work nicely.
If you've got a custom kernel then you'll to recompile it. It is possible that you might have some problems getting X to start, depending on what you've done. You might have to run xorgsetup ( or xfree86 equivalent, depending ).
But for the most part there shouldn't be too many, if any, problems. If there are be sure to ask if you can't resolve them.

I found your liberal use of English confusing. Could you explain more fully what you've done?
yeah i havent done much to this OS as of now...I dont plan on it till i get the ability to stream mp3s, but not before I make the switch. thanks for the heads-up.
concerning the first question:
lemme 'splain
I have done some searches on this forum and google about streaming mp3 files from an XP machine to play on this Linux box using XMMS.
XMMS can play mp3s just fine, it just cant stream them..they need to be played locally and I simply do not have the drive space to move them.
So, using the information I have found; In order to achieve my goal of playing music from an XP computer in the basement on a Linux box upstairs I need to somehow "mount the drive"? and/or use samba, which is alien to me.
do I somehow mount the drive and it will work? or do i need to mount it and then use samba? can i use samba exclusively? and also. how do i even go about doing any of the solutions to the above questions?
sorry about the poor english. I uh..was typing with my toes....blindfolded.
Samba is what you'll need to use. Basically, with that, you'll mount a remote windows drive like it is a local drive and then you should be able to stream mp3s to your heart's content.
I personally have never used Samba, but I know of a couple of good resources. The first is the Samba homepage itself. The second, I'm told, is here.
Beyond that I really can't say much. I hope that's a start.
thats what did it....im gonna try the swap in a little bit. thanks for your help guys...
screw samba, i know im a n00b and all...but that is useless to me....
maybe it wll come in handy when i turn this into a print server..but jeeze...that command did everything i wanted it to. and people all over the net were sayin to use samba for that task...
really though. i would ocmpletly lost without this forum...
linux is soo fun to learn!
ok the hard drive switch didnt work, it said "kernel panic"
so i put it back...so i take it im gonna have to find some way to get those cd roms drives to work, im gonna flash the bios after my final today...then try again
but i do have a quetion about the mounting the network drive.
is there a way to have to mount automatically when you restart?
