minicom /dev/ttyUSB0 not found

What I am doing is

I tried to use minicom to access the USB network, but it always says cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0, No such file or directory.

I have compile and set my Debian 2.6.8 kernel with USB networking modulize and enabled.
I can setup the USB network using ifconfig usb0 .....
I can ping the USB device in this network.

But why in my /dev directory /dev/ttyUSB0 missing ?

Should I just
mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
(actually, I tried it but minicom still do not work.. I do not understand how this stuff works..)

I know nothing of this, but a similar thread is running in the Slackware forum.
