kernel probs 2.6.0-test6 unable to open initial console

hey, I'm trying out kernel 2.6.0-test6, anyways, I'm running arch linux and kernel 2.4.22 without a prob. In my bootloader I set root=/dev/discs/disc0/part2, with 2.6.0 it won't accept this, I have to use /dev/hda2. once I do this, the system stops on "Warning: unable to open initial console". any pointers?
