Exclamation Kernel 2.4 in Zipslack (Waring: unable to open an initial console | Kernel Panic...)

Hello, iīm from Argentina and i got this problem:

I have a pentium 100 with Slackware 7.1 and kernel 2.2.16 in a ext2fs partition. I did compile and install the kernel 2.4 and i was very happy

Some day, i try to install the kernel 2.4 in my fatherīs PC (pentium 750) . In this PC , i have Slackware 7.1 in a DOS partition (Zipslack with slackware packets) but i canīt run it. I see this message:

Waring: unable to open an initial console
Kernel Panic: no init found (try passing init= option to kernel)

Is not a /dev/tty files problem , i have kernel 2.2.16 runing very well.

Can anybody help me?

This is part of my lilo.conf :

image = /vmlinuz
root = /dev/hdc1 <--- linux is in this HD
label = 2
alias = Linux-2.4

PD: SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, IīM NOT VERY WELL SPEAKING IT.

i've gotten that same error before, and it turned out to be a lilo.conf problem. it's very unlikely that it's any other type of error. the console is one of the first commands run by linux, and an error there almost always means that the root partition was incorrectly identified in lilo.conf. i don't know enough about your system to say what the correct root partition is - just keep trying until you get one that works. this particular error isn't terribly dangerous.

it's a good idea to separate the sections of lilo.conf that run different kernels. that way, at boot, you can select whichever kernel you want to run.

As far as I have tried the root of ZipSlack should be the partition where the Windows sytem is. Which is /dev/hda1 , you may check the instructions on how to install ZipSlack. It says that you should unzip it in the C:\ partition of your Windows. And for me that is the is /dev/hda1 , unless you are having another Windows Sytem in your PC, like Windows 98 and XP both in one PC.

Good luck!
