Talking kdump monitor / script help

hi all, if I wanted to check if the /var/crash fs had data in there already, preventing a kdump file from being written should it be needed, how would i go about scripting this? I would want it on a schedule in cron maybe, then to mount the fs at /var/crash, then by some method determine if it requires clearing, and then clear the fs, then unmount. If it needs clearing, to send an alert / message, if it doesn't need clearing, do nothing and unmount the fs. any ideas or script examples would be welcome, thanks all.
