I used the image mentioned earlier and put it on a 4GB SD card. After the first boot to ubuntu I followed the instructions here: http://rhombus-tech.net/allwinner_a1..._ubuntu_image/
and executed 'depmod -a' and rebooted.
On reboot the wireless worked fine and connected. But I still couldn't access the internet unless I was root. I found this page: https://blog.tuinslak.org/socket-permission-denied
Looks like the image we are using was built with CONFIG_ANDROID_PARANOID_NETWORK set.
I created the aid_inet group and added myself. Now the internet works fine for me.
So you went to terminal and typed in depmod -a and then just powered down and back up and t automatically picked up wireless? I tried that with nothing new...?

Are you logged in as root? you may have to follow the page he links about the permission denied error to get wifi working as a non-root user.
Ok, so instead of unplugging the power and plugging back in I actually went to the top right and selected to restart and the wireless is now working. Thanks ebina1!
I think I screwed something up while trying to get Bluetooth to work. Now I don't even have the Bluetooth application in ubuntu. I purged the 'bluez' (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1812493) (bottom of page) and since then I lost all Bluetooth functionality. Any ideas on how to get it back?

What error do you get when you try to reinstall it?
