Post Inspiron 6000 doesn't get network conection:Distro::FC4

iam a complete newbie to this,so,kindly provide me the detailed solution to the following:

Let me begin with my installations history :

1.FC3 :Problems::1.didnot detect the Intel Chipset.
2.unable to connect to network.
2.FC4 :Problems::Along with the above two,it sometimes showed all the weird graphics.

I dont know ..all of them are working well with my Desktop...when it comes to this Laptop,
it's not upto expectations. It may be a problem with hardware too..as I have read some of the
posts,they say that.
3.Mandriva 06 : it is much better than the previous two things.
it detected all the hardware perfectly. It also allowed me to connect to
internet after I installed firmware for it,but it often gets stuckup..nothing
could be done..no mouse,no keyboard nothingg can be moved.I have to force it
to shutdown.

Can anybody help me thru any of these problems...wat about fc5..did anyone tried it ?? If it is
good for laptops,plz..let me know.Thanx in advance!!

Inspiron 6000,512 RAM,60GB HDD,Intel 915 GM.

if you got it to work (almost completely) on mandriva, then it will be able to work on any distro (with the proper drivers loaded and settings)

first things first.. post all of the (Detailed) hardware information on your laptop.. ie network card, sound card, mouse/keyboard, monitor refresh rates (vertical and horizontal sync rates as well), etc.

when you have this information, go to the lq.org hcl to see if you can find some of your hardware in there, and read what others have said about it. or go to some other site and look for the information about it's compatibility with linux, or go directly to the manufacturer's site and if possible download the drivers for it.

if you cant get it to work yourself, at least post all the hardware info as i mentioned, and maybe someone can help with that specific piece of hardware.

if you would have searched for your laptop here, you would have got these results, check them out as well

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-Newbie and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

It's all about drivers, I think. Please post the detailed specs. It's quite easy to get, just run 'lspci' from console (terminal program).

Wink try drivers

Hi,

I guess u should try downloading thecorrect drivers for your laptop from the Manufacturers website.
Many of them like Dell give proper linux drivers on the website.

Well why are you installing firmware..... That is for chip upgrades....

You can also try attaching a PS/2 mouse just to check as sometimes the USB mouse and touchpad don't have proper drivers in the distros....

Hope it helps...
